Implants are a restorative option used by dentists to replace missing teeth. A titanium implant is placed into the bone where the root of the tooth once was. After the bone has healed around the implant (a process called osseointegration) a tooth can then be placed on the implant restoring that location to normal form and function. In most cases no one will ever know that a tooth is an implant, they look and feel natural and function much like your own teeth.
Implants can also be used to hold a denture or partial in place. If a patient has multiple missing teeth and wears a denture or partial, implants can be placed and attachments added that connect the denture or partial to the implant. It is similar to the way snaps work on a piece of clothing. The denture or partial snaps onto the implant and the implants help hold it in place. One advantage of this is if a patient wears a denture on their upper arch and they get implants placed, the roof of their mouth no longer has to be covered by the denture because the implants help hold the denture securely in place.
